چکیده

Abstract There has been a remarkable increase in induced seismicity Western Canada and the majority of these events can be related to hydraulic fracturing operations applied develop unconventional reservoirs. The underlying mechanism such is still unclear needs investigated mitigate risks future events. In this paper, we propose new integrated approach characterize fracturing-induced seismicity. Inferred faults target area were first identified by ant-tracking fractures characterized simulating processes. coupled flow-geomechanics modeling was then performed compute Coulomb Failure Stress determine reactivation pre-existing faults. A case study finally utilized demonstrate applicability method. Four north-south-oriented interpreted half-length calculated from 84 127 m. results model good agreement with actual spatially temporally. Three types triggering mechanisms accounted for HF-induced seismicity, including propagation, connection between fault connections natural around fault. injection rate could decreased seismic

Hydraulic Fracturing of Naturally Fractured Reservoirs

A carefully engineered stimulation that makes use of opening mode fractures is an effective way to reduce injection and production impedance and provide better access for the fluid to enter and promote shearing in the main reservoir volume. We present results from field experiments that mapped the fracture geometry for opening mode hydraulic fractures formed in naturally fractured crystalline r...

Hydraulic Fracturing and Seismicity in the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin

The development of most unconventional oil and gas resources relies upon subsurface injection of very large volumes of fluids, which can induce earthquakes by activating slip on a nearby fault. During the last 5 years, accelerated oilfield fluid injection has led to a sharp increase in the rate of earthquakes in some parts of North America. In the central United States, most induced seismicity ...

Discrete Element Simulation of Hydraulic Fracturing and Induced Seismicity in Engineered Geothermal Systems

In this paper the Discrete Element Model (DEM) ‘ESyS_Particle’, previously used to model fracture of brittle rocks and earthquake processes, is further developed to be able to be applied to the hydraulic fracturing process in Engineered Geothermal Systems (EGS). The advantage of DEM is that large deformations and dynamic process can be modelled easily. ESyS_Particle has been used to successfull...

Coupled Thermo-Hydro-Mechanical-Chemical Modeling of Water Leak-Off Process during Hydraulic Fracturing in Shale Gas Reservoirs

The water leak-off during hydraulic fracturing in shale gas reservoirs is a complicated transport behavior involving thermal (T), hydrodynamic (H), mechanical (M) and chemical (C) processes. Although many leak-off models have been published, none of the models fully coupled the transient fluid flow modeling with heat transfer, chemical-potential equilibrium and natural-fracture dilation phenome...
